Today was Avalynn’s second birthday, and we celebrated with a small party at Ali’s parents’ house. We wanted to keep things simple, not just for Ali, but for all of us. And honestly, it worked out perfectly.
Despite all she’s been through, Ali was an absolute trooper. She stayed downstairs with everyone for the entire party, which lasted over three hours. It’s a testament to the boundless power of a mother’s love. No amount of discomfort was going to keep her from being fully present for Avalynn on her special day.
A huge part of Ali’s ability to hang in there came from Monica, a lifelong family friend whose kindness made all the difference. Monica came over well before the party and spent hours massaging Ali from head to toe. She even warmed towels and used them to gently rub down Ali’s head, arms, and legs. It’s been months since I’ve seen Ali so relaxed.
Dinner was a mix of comfort foods: pizza, chicken wings, mac and cheese, and some Asian dishes. The cake, though, was the star of the meal, a beautiful custom cake from Julia’s Homestyle Bakery in Murfreesboro, TN, courtesy of Ali’s cousin, Naly. It was so good that I’m already planning to get Liam’s birthday cake from there in April when he turns six.
Avalynn had a blast opening her gifts, and we are so grateful for the thoughtfulness of everyone who celebrated with us. That said, the highlight for both Avalynn and Liam wasn’t the gifts themselves but the pink tinsel from the decorations. They spent most of the party laughing and playing with it, proving that sometimes the simplest things bring the most joy.
I can confidently say it was one of the happiest days we’ve had in months. Avalynn was celebrated, cherished, and loved every minute of her party. Even more special was seeing Ali surrounded by family, sharing laughter and warmth despite the challenges she faces daily.
No family is perfect, but between my family and Ali’s, it’s as close as you can get.
